Analyzing My 2024 Spotify Wrapped

Alethea Freidberg

Spotify Wrapped 2024 is here, and although it has already been out for a few weeks, my favorite unofficial holiday as a music industry professional and fan is back! Spotify Wrapped is my Super Bowl, and I treat the big game very seriously. Although I was slightly disappointed by the lack of fun features like my "Sound Town" based on my music taste and my "Listening Personality" (I’m an Early Adopter, by the way), I still thoroughly enjoyed analyzing my Spotify Wrapped as per yearly tradition. Because I savor everything Spotify Wrapped-related, I like to predict my Top Songs and Artists the day before it drops, and then compare those predictions to the results. So, without further ado, let’s dive into my predictions versus my actual Wrapped results.

Top Artists (Prediction):

  1. Taylor Swift

  2. Chappell Roan (3)

  3. Charli XCX (2)

  4. Noah Kahan (4)

  5. One Direction

Possible surprises: Olivia Rodrigo, Lana Del Rey, Morgan Wallen, Harry Styles

My 2024 Top Artists:

  1. Taylor Swift

  2. Charli XCX

  3. Chappell Roan

  4. Noah Kahan

  5. Morgan Wallen

To no avail, Taylor Swift reigns supreme atop my Spotify Wrapped for the fourth year running. This should come to no surprise considering that I listened to The Tortured Poets Department essentially for a month nonstop after its release. “Fork found in kitchen” if I do say so myself. "Fork found in kitchen," if I do say so myself.

I debated where Charli XCX and Chappell Roan would end up, but I knew they’d take those podium places. And I was correct: Brat summer edged out the Midwest Princess, but that’s what happens when you take Brat summer too seriously. Chappell landing at #3 is a testament to her finally receiving her flowers after discovering her though “Casual” in 2022 when she had less than 100,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.

I am so ecstatic that Noah Kahan is in my top 5! He deserves to finally be up there after being a fan of his music for years, and I do say he definitely had a boost from seeing him at MSG this past July. And as for Morgan Wallen… somehow, he sneaks into my Top 5 every year.

Top Songs (Prediction):

  1. Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me (1)

  2. The Prophecy (12)

  3. Club Classics (28)

  4. My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys (8)

  5. Naked in Manhattan (39)

My 2024 Top Songs:

  1. Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me – Taylor Swift

  2. We Are The People – Empire of the Sun

  3. Florida!!!!!!!! – Taylor Swift & Florence and the Machine

  4. Take It Off – Fisher

  5. So Long, London – Taylor Swift

Possible surprises: The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived (13), Taste (66), 365 (9), Apple (26), So Long, London (5)

With a whopping 160 streams since its release on April 19th (and definitely more since the release of Spotify Wrapped), "Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me" takes the gold medal for my most-played song this year. I was 100% certain of this prediction, and am in no way surprised… the real question is: how many of these streams were me practicing my Roomba choreography for The Eras Tour?

My Top 5 showcases the duality of my 2024 in music: The Tortured Poets Department meets my running playlist, running for the thrill of it. Two of my most-played running tracks, "We Are The People" and "Take It Off," are sandwiched between my top three TTPD songs ("Florida!!!!!!!!" is also on said running playlist).  The one shocker of this top 5 is the lack of “The Prophecy” from The Anthology, which stunned me when I saw the list. (Yet maybe I don’t relate to it anymore, so it not being in my Top Songs is fitting)  But get you a girl who can do both: get into running while also memorizing 31 new songs over the course of a release weekend!

In case you didn’t know, the Spotify Wrapped playlists are not in order of your top 100 after the top 5 songs. Initially, “HOT TO GO” was 6th on my playlist. But before Spotify disabled the feature where you could share a song to see where it was actually ranked in your top 100, I did some deep diving to find out where my songs actually ranked, and “I Know Places (Taylor’s Version)” was #6! The original version of this song was always high in previous Wrapped editions, so having the re-recorded song this high was a pleasant surprise to see.

Deep Dive Into The Numbers:

Minutes Listened Prediction: 30,000

Minutes Listened in 2024: 37,101

Biggest Listening Day: February 16th (321 minutes)

Minutes Listened to My Top Artist: 12,371 (Top 0.5% of listeners worldwide)

I’m always surprised by how low my minutes seem for someone who works in music, but this year, I exceeded my expectations! Fun fact: 34.3% of my total minutes were spent listening to Taylor Swift, slightly down from 36.7% last year.

Songs Listened To: 1,799

Artists Listened To: 950

Taylor Swift Songs on My Wrapped Prediction: 31 (up from 27 in 2022 and 2023)

Taylor Swift Songs on My Wrapped: 26 (down from last year)

I was so shocked that the number wasn’t higher, but I’m not surprised considering it appears that Spotify is trying to diversify my music taste, and even arranged artists that have multiple songs on my Wrapped with some separations. Yet Taylor Swift will always reign supreme upon my Spotify Wrapped, especially when she releases an album during the year.

Possible Surprises and Spoilers Overall:

  • I predicted that Morgan Wallen would be in my top 5 again, and I was indeed correct. I wish I could give a definitive answer for why, yet here we are.

  • I predicted One Direction was going to be on my Spotify wrapped, definitely influenced by the death of Liam Payne. Surprisingly, no One Direction songs were on there, and the band was surprisingly missing from my Top 5 artists.

  • I predicted that a lot of my running playlist from earlier this year would prominent, and I called it with 2 Fisher songs high up on my wrapped (“TAKE IT OFF” and “Atmosphere” and “We Are The People” very high.

  • My longshot prediction was that Gracie Abrams would sneak into my Top 5 artists solely because of the sheer amount of times I’ve streamed "That’s So True" in the past month. She did not make my Top Artists at all.

  • Lastly, I was saddened that not a single Harry Styles song graced my Wrapped despite my predictions.

Furthermore, here are some of my surprises from this year’s Wrapped:

  • As stated earlier, there was a lot of balance between Taylor Swift and other artists, especially considering that The Tortured Poets Department came out this year.

  • I was shocked to not have “All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version) (From The Vault)” on my Wrapped this year, considering that one of my favorite songs of all time is a mainstay in my music listening rotation, especially when my fall playlist defrosts. Even though I did have “10 minutes to spare” on May 19th 2024, I can pinpoint a concrete reason why it just missed out.

  • I was feeling “So High School”, with the song being so high (school) on my Wrapped. There is a reason why…it may or may not have to do with some personal endeavors as of recent.

  • For the 3rd year running, we have another track 5 in my top 5 yet again. “So Long, London” joins “You’re On Your Own, Kid”, and “All Too Well” in this special cohort.

  • Where is “Treacherous?” A common fixture of my Spotify Wrapped and fall listening habits, the lack of this song on my Wrapped is something to notice, but I relate to this song now more in the context of the mashup with “The Alchemy.”

Overall, Spotify Wrapped had its yearly moment in the public consciousness, yet I continue to celebrate it even though it is a fancy recap of my music streaming and listening data. That’s all for now (until Wrapped 2025)
